Story Behind the Song
The Napkin tells the story of coming to terms with a failed relationship. Words impulsively scribbled on a bar napkin describe a relationship ending where “There really was no one to blame.” Although the lyricist admits “The words were never easy/But I loved you just the same,” the fateful bar napkin eventually makes its way into the hands of his ex and ends up comforting both and providing closure.
