Story Behind the Song

On Hummingbird Wings is a song moving from despair to hope. The lyricist, as the once-beloved, cries to the ex, “Don’t say that we’ve both moved on/I don’t know what that means/I haven’t gone anywhere and I’m still torn at the seams/Don’t assume anything about where I am at.” There’s a tiny glimmer of hope, of moving on from being smaller, “standing on the edge/counting back from ten/holding every breath.” It’s a small step from wanting to fly to flying away.
