Story Behind the Song
Jail of Silence tells a painful story of hiding behind secret shame. The lyricist confesses, “For years I tried but couldn’t forget the darkness of my childhood secret/I was abused, tormented, and confused.” In teenage years, survivors are often lonely and withdrawn, defiant, “wasting away in a jail called silence.” Even though every day is hard, survivors “find it hard every day to cope, but I will survive with strength and hope.” As long as children are assaulted, they live in the shadows. Listen, and know that “no child should ever feel any shame” in the Jail of Silence.
