Story Behind the Song

Remembering a dream may be an uncommon experience, but an out of body experience is truly a rarity! I Am A Spirit was inspired by a dream involving the lyricist at her lake house. She explains, “I dreamed I flew all around the lake while my neighbors waved at me in marvel. When I woke up my heart was beating fast and my face felt cool to the touch.” After relaying the dream to her closest friend, she responded that the lyricist may have had an out of body experience. She poignantly shared, “We are not a body with a spirit, but a spirit in a body.” Taking the night to contemplate her friend’s words, she awoke the next morning and wrote, I Am A Spirit, which expresses the beauty and the possibilities of a free spirit.
