It's Time to Rock!
Well, well, well… yes… it’s that time. Let’s talk about rock & roll!
Almost everyone around the world knows what rock and roll is, or at least the overall sound. There’s nothing like rock and roll to get a party started. It gets you moving and singing. There are many, many, different types of “rock” today and the genre has spawned into quite a few genres on its own, including;
Roots Rock
Doo Wop
British Invasion
Soft Rock
Hard Rock
Heavy Metal
Punk, Ska
Surf Rock
Southern Rock
Latin Rock
Rockabilly
Pop Rock
Glam Rock… I could go on and on, but you get the idea.
Rock started to appear around the mid 1940’s in America, but really gained its popularity in the 1950’s with sounds from blues, jazz, gospel, and country. Rock can invite itself in to all of those genres and with the genre bending of today--it does. At the start, typically the instruments used were piano, bass, guitar, and drums. The vocals varied greatly but were a very exciting time for a new sound in music. It was sort of a renaissance time, in my opinion. It’s a fact that both the Black/African American community and the White community liked the music equally and didn’t care about the artist’s race… just the music. It’s beautiful. Rock had the power to bring people together.
It’s somewhat of a mystery of who is credited for the start of Rock & Roll, but usual suspects are Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bill Haley and the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Howlin’ Wolf, Bo Diddley, and many more.
There are way too many artists today to list and way too many different kinds of rock, but let me say this-- rock is versatile, hard, loving, kind, tough, beautiful, remorseful, respectful, disrespectful, sad, touching, strong, colorful, and amazingly beautiful. I know there are at least 100 more adjectives that describe my absolute favorite genre, but I think you’ll agree-- rock and roll is here to stay!
