10 Songwriting Tips

There are so many ways that you can write a song, but I want to give you some simple tips to get you started. Be sure to check out my video at the end of this blog.

  1. Keep it simple at first—choose your subject

  2. Write a paragraph or story about the subject you are thinking about

  3. Separate sentences and thoughts

Pull out sentences that are important and create a list of those sentences.

  4. Shorten it

  5. Rhyme words where you would like.

I suggest rhyming ending words of the lines at first. Either every two lines or every other ending word of the line. There are several ways to go about this— find out what you find most comfortable with first.

  6. Count the syllables in each line so they match—not exactly, but around the same number

  7. Say it as a poem to a beat. Either a metronome or internet beat

This will help you find out how long it will be as a full song. If, when you read it it's anything longer than around 1.5 minutes, it's probably too long for the standard 2.5 - 3.5 minute long song.

  8. Put i into song format with verses, choruses, and a bridge.

There are many different ways to do this, but a lot of times it's verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus.

  9. Make sure it fits the meter flow (beat) as you want

If when you're talking it out, it seems like something doesn't flow right, like it doesn't seem on beat or rushed, it will most likely need to be edited during the song composition process.

  10. Go over it and make any changes.

I find looking at it a day or two later gives you a fresh perspective on if you want to change any of it or keep it as it is.
